  Moving to England

    Weather
Winters in England are usually more severe in the north, but milder in other areas of the country. Weather in England, however, can be totally unpredictable. A nice, sunny fall day can quickly turn into an ugly, rainy day. So in England do as the Brits do--always carry a spare umbrella or raincoat.

Average temperatures in London are something between 45-68 F (8 and 20 C) during the summer months of May-September, and as low as 36-57 F (3-14 C) during the winter months of November - March.

    Religion
The Church of England, an Episcopalian Protestant Church, is the state church of England, and about three fifths of the population is Protestant. Next in number are the Roman Catholics. Judaism is also widely practiced, and due to immigration from South Asian countries in the past several decades, England has a considerable presence of Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs.

    Language
When you relocate to England, you will meet people from around the world, speaking several different languages. Just visit the south-Asian South Hall area of London if you want to hear some authentic Punjabi, add comma or head out to Chinatown for a true Asian experience.

Within England, however, there are many different accents and dialects that are famous for their distinctiveness. The rough Yorkshire dialect and famous London cockney accent may sound like two totally different languages to you, but don't be fooled - its English all the way.

    Food
The typical British cuisine includes favorites like Fish N’ Chips, Steak and Kidney Pie and the famous Yorkshire Pudding. But England cosmopolitanism is also apparent in its food, and you can find everything from Dim Sum to Falafel stands, especially in the larger cities.

    Education
England is known for its higher education universities and colleges. In fact, its schools have traditionally set educational standards for the rest of the world. The world-known Oxford and Cambridge Universities, which were founded almost a 1000 years ago, are still considered the education centers of the world.

England has an admirable schooling system supported entirely by public funds. There are also many top-quality private schools, such as Eton and Harrow, and schooling is mandatory between the ages of 5 and 16.

    Travel Documents
You need to have a valid passport issued by the government of your country before you enter England. If you are an EU resident, you do not need a British visa.

If you have an American passport, or are a citizen of Canada, Australia or New Zealand, you can stay in England without a visa for six months.

    Currency & Costs
Most places in England will accept international credit cards. Overseas visitors can get cash from ATMs if their bank is linked to the same system as that of UK. London, being the world capital of commerce, fashion, and entertainment that it is, is one of the most expensive cities in all of Europe.

Most banks are open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM.

Currency can be exchanged at various places, special desks in hotels, or the Britain Visitor Centre. Outlets of banks are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at airports.

    Health & Safety
London has 107 hospitals, more than Paris, or even Boston. London’s medical schools and hospitals have state-of–the-art equipment, and are amongst the best in the world. Call 999 for emergency service if you need to call for an ambulance.

    Weights & Measures
The official system in the UK is the metric system, measuring weight and mass in kilos and grams, and distance and length in kilometers and centimeters.

    Electricity
The electricity used in the UK is a 240-v AC (50-60HZ), so you will need a converter when traveling from the US.
